There’s a place in Florida where sponge diving history meets baklava and handmade jewelry, and it’s somehow even better than it sounds. The Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks, a waterfront strip so historically significant that five of its boats sit on the National Register of Historic Places, is about to host a two-day craft festival that you’d be absolutely ridiculous to skip.

The Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks Craft Festival lands on Saturday, July 11, from 10 am – 7 pm and Sunday, July 12, from 10 am – 5 pm, all along the scenic stretch of Dodecanese Boulevard. Admission is free. It’s family-friendly. It’s pet-friendly. Honestly, it’s just friendly.

Presented by the Tarpon Springs Merchants Association and produced by SIK Promotions, the festival is bringing together regional and national makers to showcase pottery, handcrafted jewelry, photography, home décor, specialty foods, and a wide variety of upscale artisan goods.

It’s basically the kind of shopping experience where you walk in just “browsing” and leave with a handmade ceramic bowl you didn’t know you needed, three pieces of jewelry, and a very strong opinion about locally sourced hot sauce.

And the setting? It’s remarkable. The Sponge Docks have been a center of Greek culture and commerce since the early 1900s, when Greek immigrants, many from the Dodecanese Islands, arrived and saw in the clear, shallow Gulf waters the same riches they’d once harvested back home. They turned Tarpon Springs into what many still call the sponge capital of the world, and the very name of Dodecanese Boulevard is a tribute to those roots.

So yes, you’re browsing handcrafted goods in one of the most culturally layered spots in all of Florida, all while watching sponge boats bob in the water behind you. It’s a little bit like shopping at a regular craft fair, except the backdrop has been significant to American maritime history for over a century.

Suzanne King, owner of SIK Promotions, put it simply: “The Sponge Docks Craft Festival is more than just a craft show; it’s a celebration of community and creativity.” And she’s right.

Events like this give local and traveling artisans a real platform to connect directly with buyers, while drawing visitors into a waterfront neighborhood that absolutely deserves more foot traffic. It’s good for the artists, good for the local economy, and very, very good for your weekend plans.

The festival takes place at 735 Dodecanese Blvd. in Tarpon Springs. It’s free, it’s beautiful, and there’s a solid chance you’ll find something you’ll still love ten years from now.
