First of its kind pro wrestling-inspired contemporary art exhibition coming to St. Pete

While St. Pete is celebrated for its arts scene, the Tampa Bay region at large is widely known for something a little different: professional wrestling. A first-of-its-kind exhibition coming to St. Pete next year is going to combine the two with a wild display of kayfabe-inspired contemporary art that showcases the performance art of pro wrestling.

House Show: Power, Spectacle, and Pro Wrestling will bring that showcase to the Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg in 2027, co-curated by Adam Abdalla, founder of Orange Crush: The Journal of Art & Wrestling and Katherine Pill, Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the MFA. The museum says House Show will “explore the relationship between contemporary art and professional wrestling, bringing together artists and performers whose work engages the theatricality, intensity, and cultural complexity of the wrestling world.”

The result will be a very serious show about what is, perhaps wrongfully, considered by some to be a very unserious subject. The exhibition takes very seriously pro wrestling’s blend of truth and fiction, and it is directly inspired by the concept of kayfabe, “the long-standing wrestling term for the unspoken agreement between performers and audience to treat the scripted as sincere.”

House Show will use that cultural experience as a lens with which to view the world as a whole and the structures of our societies. It’ll be one big Stone Cold Stunner to our social narratives, and it ought to be quite beautiful in the process.

The exhibition will feature more than 50 artworks, including painting, sculpture, video, photography, and performance from the 1960s to the present, featuring artists who have in-ring experience, “as well as those who are more distanced from the pro wrestling world, yet employ its supercharged energy in their work.” The exhibition will be accompanied by a full slate of events, talks, and public programming that will draw from the worlds of art and wrestling alike.

House Show is slated to run November 2027 through March 2028, so you have plenty of time to stream hours of lucha shows and WrestleManias to prepare. Learn more about the upcoming exhibition here.
