Sean Thongsiri, the visionary behind Mangosteen and Glass Noodle, is about to unveil a new restaurant at 1601 Central Avenue. Plate Sushi Grill and Lounge (Plate), a 4,000‑square‑foot culinary haven on the first floor of the Arte apartment building, promises a unique and exciting dining experience. The restaurant is scheduled to open by May 1, with a sister location in Tampa (13134 North Dale Mabry Hwy.) set to open its doors even earlier on April 15.
Leonard Contractors is completing the build‑out of both locations, which are styled as a tapas bar with affordable omakase—a Japanese dining experience where the chef chooses the menu and prepares a multi‑course meal. “You can come in and try three, four, even five different items for under 20 dollars,” says Thongsiri excitedly.

A $70,000 cooking unit, built into an 18‑seat table, will be the focal point of the culinary action. Guests will relish delectable sushi options as well as teppanyaki prepared right in front of them. “I’m not talking teriyaki chicken,” Thongsiri adds sharply. “I’m talking GOOD ingredients.” If the quality and care of Thongsiri’s other establishments, like Mangosteen, serve as an indicator of “GOOD ingredients,” Plate Sushi Grill and Lounge will surely deliver.

Over 40 restaurants opened in 30 years
Plate Sushi Grill and Lounge’s St. Pete and Tampa debuts will mark three new restaurants from Thongsiri in just five months, following the opening of The Crane in January. “I like to work, create the menus, and see people enjoy it,” says Thongsiri. “It’s my passion. I just love doing it.” Thongsiri reports that he’s opened over 40 restaurants to date. Notable spots include Mangosteen, Green Pagoda, Glass Noodle, and The Crane.
Thongsiri has lived and worked on Central Avenue for almost 30 years, starting as a dishwasher, busboy, and server before becoming a successful restaurateur with 40 notches on his belt. “If the opportunity presents itself, I like bringing new concepts,” he says.
