The next generation of Tampa Bay’s indie music scene

Indie Night organizer, St. Pete native, and Rohna bassist Andre Hernandez has completed 33 successful events across the country since launching the series in 2021. While this is only the second St. Pete installment, the local music culture holds a special place in his heart. “I think what’s really cool about St. Pete is it’s very eclectic,” says Hernandez. “When we do Indie Night in other places, it’s mostly just college students, but in St. Pete we get everyone across the age demographic… It always feels a little bit more special when we do it there.”

Beyond entertaining crowds with a stellar lineup, Indie Night serves another mission — championing event venues and independent artists. “It’s not just a show — it’s a movement to preserve and revitalize our local music scene and culture,” Hernandez says. With the loss of venues like The Local 662 and State Theatre, opportunities for emerging artists have become rare. That’s why Hernandez values working with Bayboro Brewing, a space known for spotlighting new talent.

“If you build it, they will come…”

Hernandez, a lifelong St. Pete resident, has seen the city evolve — some changes for the better, others not so much. He hopes Indie Night inspires more grassroots efforts like it. The entire event is run by just one person: him.

“To have things independently run is important to a thriving music scene,” he says. “When art spaces change often and become corporate, smaller artists don’t get a chance to play in the venue… it gives them more opportunities.” Riffing on the famous Kevin Costner line from Field of Dreams, he adds, “If you build it, they will come.”
