Laymen’s Food Review: Subs at the Station

Laymen’s Food Review: Subs at the Station

Ever been to the Historic Seaboard Train Station at 420 22nd Street South? Most know it as home to the St. Petersburg Clay Company featuring clay and pottery artists in the ‘Burg from up-and-commers to pros like Charlie Parker. It’s a neat space for art and a great re-use of the city’s history originally built in 1926 as a freight depot.

We went, however, to try the sandwiches at the CA Cafe. After regular reader Tracy Kennard, tipped us to their "excellent sandwiches and salads" made by owner Dan Sopka, we figured why not give it a shot?

Just in case you were wondering, CA Cafe is named after Dan’s daughters, Corie and Abbie. Below is what the Rearden Killion and iLovetheBurg.com team thought about the grub…

The Vegenetor: I ate the yummy Well Car Rail Grinder Sub along with a Strawberry & Banana smoothie. The sub came with mounds of tomato, avocado, cucumber, alfalfa sprouts and provolone cheese. Plain and simple, but it really hit the spot especially with a touch of salt and pepper. The smoothie was sweet, nutritious and filling. A perfect and quick meatless lunch!

DJ Fab: Being a subs and deli sandwiches place, I decided to see how their Cuban compared to others. (They call it the Flat Car here since all the subs are nicknamed with train references being that the place is an old train station. How creative is that?!) Well, it didn’t disappoint. The Cuban wasn’t too salty which is my usual complaint and that "special sauce" they use makes the sandwich flavorful with a little tangy sweetness. And the Cuban bread was just perfectly warm and not overtoasted.

El Presidente: I’ve never met a Cuban-Italian I didn’t like. Take the Locomotive– All the meats, provolone and dressing you’d find on a traditional Italian sub placed between some Cuban bread. The coldcuts were great and plentiful but it’s the cuban that shines here. I appreciated the lightly toasted outside for a warm/cold mix with a little bit of tangy from the dressing.

Guest ‘Burger: For my meal I chose the build-your-own-sandwich, also called the HOBO option, which included turkey, lettuce, tomato, american cheese, mayo and mustard. The meal came with a bag of chips and a drink for like $5. Although it was a pretty plain choice, they used a lot of each ingredient so it was filling and flavorful!

With sandwiches, subs and salads ranging from $3.50 to $7.50, I don’t think you can go wrong. Oh, and they have daily specials too!

The CA Cafe is open from 10am-3pm, Monday to Saturday and located at 420 22nd St. South.
