A hot new spot for NY bagels and exquisite pastries has popped in St. Pete, just a block from Rollin Oats Market: Doakes N Doodle at 2930 Dr MLK Jr St N. The cute name pays homage to owner Amanda Ventura’s two adorable cats.

“We love St. Pete and wanted to be a part of this community,” says Ventura. Originally from Ocean City, New Jersey, Ventura moved down to the Sunshine State several years ago and also operates an Italian restaurant in Bradenton called Scuderia.

Currently, visitors can enjoy plain and everything bagels straight from the Bronx. You can add cream cheese, or bacon/egg/cheese to these baked delights. The pastry case is filled with multiple danishes, a dangerously good double chocolate muffin, and big blueberry muffins.

“The lunch program is in the works right now, notes Ventura. A series of homemade soups, pizza by the slice, layered cannoli and tiramisu will all soon arrive at the quaint cafe.

Ventura also plans to bring in cheesecake by the slice from The Cheesecake Cutie down in Anna Maria Island. Visitors will also find Carol, Ventura’s mother, and Andrea running things behind the counter daily.

The cafe is spacious, with cozy booths, stools, and couches to lounge on (plus power outlets if you’re looking to get some work done. Many will recognize this spot as the former 9th Street Coffee Bar. The new owners spent a couple of weeks making the space their own, but visitors can still enjoy the venue’s celebrated Italian roast coffee when they visit.
