We once asked Buster Cooper how old he was and his answer was he stopped counting (though Wikipedia says he was born in 1929).
Regardless of how old the legendary jazz trombonist really is, apparently he’s been around just long enough to be presented with the annual Social Justice Pioneer Award at The Studio@620’s Sixth Anniversary Celebration Gala, this Sunday.

A graduate of Gibbs High School, class of 1947, Cooper has played the Apollo Theater in New York City and put his brass talents behind such legendary figures as Lionel Hampton, Benny Goodman, and Duke Ellington.
The evening’s events include dinner by Banyon Coffee and Tea Company, an all-star jazz jam led by Nate Najar and an exclusive hot off the press preview of The Studio@620’s new quarterly arts publication, The Studio Review.
The event is this Sunday, 6/20, starting at 6:20pm.

In the meantime, here’s some vintage footage of Buster throwin’ down.
