St. Pete Yacht Club to be demolished, and rebuilt downtown

St. Pete Yacht Club to be demolished, and rebuilt downtown

The historic St. Pete Yacht Club, first founded in 1909, is set to be demolished. The news was first reported by The Tampa Bay Business Journal. Club president Brian K Smith penned a letter to members to inform them of the decision to demolish the property and redevelop it. Renovation costs proved to be prohibitive, according to the letter.

Smith wrote that they received consultation from an architectural firm, and held around 20 focus groups before coming to the decision. Specific needs such as an elevator, pool deck replacement, and a new kitchen are all part of the planned improvements.

Remodeling would also not be in compliance with FEMA standards. Currently, the 1917 structure’s floor elevation is 6 feet below FEMA regulations.

Making a more weather resilient St. Pete Yacht Club

Club leaders had already begun working on a master plan for improvements back in 2022. Now it’s apparent that the century+ old facility would require too much funding, and leaders were hesitant to sink millions of dollars into a building that could be destroyed by a hurricane.

The Yacht Club will design a new space according to member feedback. TBBJ notes that demolition and construction is still a few years off. They anticipate they’ll raise funds through new initiation fees, an increase in member dues, and a capital contribution charge.
