Skyway Bridge light project adds 1,800 colorful fixtures to Tampa Bay icon

Ready to feel the glow? 1,800 LED lights will illuminate the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. While the bulbs will make the beautiful bridge even more astonishing, the new light fixtures are also about safety. It’s like staring into a kaleidoscope.

So, what exactly is happening? The Florida Department of Transportation aims to light the underside columns and bridge profile with color changeable LED high efficiency fixtures. A total of 1,824 lighting fixtures will be installed varying between 48 and 205 watts each. These lights will feature 8 different mesmerizing themes.

The project is currently in its testing phases and should be complete by fall 2019. Once complete, it will put the Skyway with other prominent bridges that feature aesthetic lighting. Ships passing below will enjoy heightened visibility at night.
