Layman’s Review: Baby Cakes Cafe

Layman’s Review: Baby Cakes Cafe

According to the menu, Baby Cakes Café was founded as a middle finger to corporate life. Well, maybe in not so many words but that’s the idea you get and, quite frankly, good for us.

Without minimizing the comfortable atmosphere, Baby Cakes is a no frills good eatin’ and reasonably priced resto located in the Grand Central District of the ‘Burg. In a near disclaimer, the menu continues to inform you that there are neither chefs nor those with culinary superiority in the kitchen, but rather those who have a passion for food and entertaining.

The Kentucky FRAUD Chicken (don’t tell Colonel Sanders) was a nice sized, breaded cutlet served with one of the joint’s signature sauces. The Aji Sauce is a vinegar avocado mix that claims to be “good on just about anything” and it certainly was so with the cutlet and the nicely seasoned beans and rice on the side. Those that prefer a bit more kick can try the Smokin’ Chipolte Sauce with peppers and a host of other spices.

Our other dish was the Cool Shrimp Ceviche served over warm rice. While ceviches are typically served as appetizers, this contrast of hot and cold in a plateful can surprise your senses and definitely fill you up.

While they claim it’s not the inspiration for the name, the 4 mini red-velvet cupcakes for $1.95 were the perfect sized after meal treat. If only we only remembered to take the photo before eating two of them. Whoops!

Go enjoy Baby Cakes, located at 2444 Central Ave.

Around $10 per meal with drink. The place carries a modest variety of wines and bottled beers. Mon-Tue, 11am-3pm; Wed-Fri 11am-3pm 5pm-10pm; Sat 11am-3pm 5pm-midnight
