St. Pete’s own Erica Sutherlin makes directorial debut on Lifetime Network

St. Pete’s own Erica Sutherlin makes directorial debut on Lifetime Network

Back in December, Erica Sutherlin made her network TV directorial debut with Lifetime’s Kirk Franklin’s a Gospel Christmas. By the end of the season, the film was the channel’s number one Christmas movie.

Now, merely months later, she’s once again pulling on her director’s hat. This time, though, she’s doing it in the Sunshine City. That’s right—in a matter of days, you’ll be able to witness TV-quality directorial talent live in the heart of St. Pete.

A “politically charged,” yet humorous, production

This isn’t the first time Sutherlin has been involved in the ‘Burg’s arts scene. In fact, she’s a Bay area local whose acting and directing experience around the city have helped her make a name for herself. In the past, she starred in Studio@620’s Voodoo MacBeth. Currently, she serves as an Artist-in-Residence at the same studio.

Next week, the Studio@620 team will welcome Sutherlin home as they host her next production, a local rendition of Pass Over. A “powerful and provocative” (Arifa Akbar, The Guardian) new play by Antoinette Nwandu, the “politically charged” (Concord Theatricals) piece blends the subtle humor of Waiting for Godot with the classic tale of Exodus. Evoking heartbreak, hope and joy, the show presents timely and important commentary on some of today’s most pressing social issues.

Sutherlin’s Pass Over production will run at Studio@620 from February 3-13 as part of the arts center’s “Social Justice Initiative” and “Signature Event Series.” To further explore the relevant themes of the play, Sunday matinée performances will be followed by “Post Performance Talk-Back” discussions during which the audience will have the chance to engage with the production team.

Preview (Feb. 3) performance seats are available for $10 a piece. All other performance seats are $25. Discounted admission is offered for students.

Don’t wait to grab your spot, though. With Sutherlin’s talent and Nwandu’s captivating writing, this one’s sure to go quick.

This production contains strong language and themes. Viewer discretion is advised.
