The Cross-Bay Ferry will make its final voyage of the season—and possibly for good—on April 30, 2025, according to an official announcement from the City of St. Petersburg.

The popular service, which currently runs Wednesday through Sunday between downtown St. Pete and Tampa, offers a scenic and stress-free alternative to driving, with one-way tickets priced at up to $12. The ferry departs from 250 8th Ave SE in St. Pete and 333 S Franklin Street in Tampa, offering both indoor and outdoor seating, bike access, and even pet-friendly rides.

Along with many others, I utilized the service to attend the Final Four Games over the weekend in Tampa. The ferry extended its docking time in Tampa to ensure St. Pete riders could catch a ride after the National Championship game.

City officials confirmed that HMS, the ferry’s operator, defaulted on its agreement with Hillsborough County and will be unable to provide a replacement vessel. Hillsborough County Commissioners will review the contract at their April 16 meeting.

This comes as a major disappointment for commuters and weekend travelers, as this season was originally slated to usher in permanent year-round service for the region. The ferry had also extended its hours to support Tampa Bay Lightning fans during home games, making it a go-to ride on game nights.

Despite the setback, the City of St. Pete is taking action. Officials are actively working with PSTA and other regional partners to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) in hopes of launching a new ferry service for Tampa Bay residents and visitors.

“We’re committed to finding a solution,” the City shared via its official channels. “Stay tuned for more updates.”

As one of the few transit options connecting both sides of the bay without the stress of I-275 traffic, the ferry has become a local favorite. Many are hopeful that a new service will set sail soon—and continue bridging the bay with ease, fun, and scenic views.
