Nearly two years ago, Mandy Keyes began creating the blueprints of what would eventually come together as a community cafe here in the ‘Burg. Between Facebook, a successful IndieGoGo campaign and regular ol’ word-of-mouth, Mandy’s idea for a cafe has completely developed, and the establishment is set to open mid-January. The Community Cafe will be located at 2444 Central Avenue.
After The Globe shut its doors in late 2011, residents of St. Petersburg were left without a late-night-entertainment alternative to bar hopping through the 200-block. From the Cafe’s website, Keyes explains, "We would like to create a late-night alternative to the bar scene," adding, "We will serve beer and wine, in addition to coffee, tea and fruit drinks, so that drinkers and non-drinkers can come out together."

Aside from having later hours than the other cafes in the area, The Community Cafe hopes to set itself apart from other businesses that are open in the evening by serving alternative, healthier food options. The menu will be based around locally grown, vegetarian and vegan dishes. During the weekdays, the Community Cafe will be offering these late-night treats until midnight, and on weekends, until 3am.
The Community Cafe offers two types of membership, both of which receive voting privileges, lending library access and discounted food and drink. The two levels of membership are "Rockstar"– which, for $20 a month, receives 10% off food and drink, and four free coffee or tea drinks per month– and "Superstar", which for $40 a month receives 20% off of food and drink and four free beverages of your choice.
The cafe is very close to getting finished!

The more communal effort, the better. The soft opening of the Cafe is late December with a Grand Opening Party planned for early January. Stay tuned for updates!
