Run Tampa Bay: local walking and running groups to join this summer

As Global Running Day strides into view on June 5, there’s no better time than now to lace up those sneakers and hit the pavement with these walking and running groups in the Tampa Bay area. Whether you’re a seasoned marathoner or just looking for a fun (and social) way to get moving, these local groups offer something for everyone. So make every step count, from sunrise jogs through nature preserves to sunset strolls along the Tampa Riverwalk.

Pinellas Run Club

Every Thursday, 6pm
Thirsty Thursday just reached a whole new level. Join Pinellas Run Club, a community run club that meets every Thursday at 6pm for 1, 2, and 3 mile routes. New to running? That’s okay. Their club is for all levels and all paces. Just head to their monthly schedule on Instagram for meetup locations. Many runs partner with local breweries, so you’ll be able to grab a cold one after the route and catch up with fellow runners.

Matter of Fact Run Club

Every Wednesday, 6:30pm
Next time you’re browsing the latest styles at Matter of Fact, a curated men’s shop in St. Pete, don’t forget to ask about their run club. Anyone can join their weekly 5k runs that take place every Wednesday at 6:30pm. Most runs begin at Matter of Fact with routes announced upon arrival. After the run, enjoy a beer at Green Bench Brewing Company.

St. Pete Running Company Running Group

Every Monday and Thursday, 6:30pm
Everyone is welcome at St. Pete Running Company’s free running groups. Meeting twice a week at the St. Pete Running Company store, this friendly and casual group follows a 5k route, though participants are encouraged to go whatever distance they’re comfortable with. Spring and summer runs are usually an out and back format to allow for more flexibility. With an average of over 50 participants, you’re guaranteed to find someone who runs or walks your pace. Another perk of this relaxed running group? All first time participants get a $10 gift card to the store.

Supernatural Food & Wine Run Club

Every Monday, 7am
You may know of Tampa’s Supernatural Food & Wine for their mega breakfast sandwiches, deli eats, and natural wines. But could you guess they also host a run club? Meeting every Monday at 7am, this group keeps it social and casual with a 9:45 pace per mile. With 8k and 5k offerings, choose your intensity and start the week off right–followed by one of their irresistible fresh cider donuts, of course.

Tampa Girls Who Walk

Ladies, there’s no better way to get moving than with Tampa Girls Who Walk. This Instagram group organizes walks throughout the month all across the Tampa Bay region, no registration or fees required. All you need to do is head to their monthly calendar of events on Instagram, where you’ll find not only scheduled walks, but also yoga and other workout meetups. Come solo, with a furry companion, or a friend to connect with other women in the area. If St. Pete is more your scene, you can also check out St. Pete Girls Who Walk, another group that hosts local walks, workout classes, and community events.

Armature Works’ Run Club

1910 North Ola Ave, Tampa
Every first and third Wednesday, 6:30pm
Why not spice up the middle of the week with a scenic 5k run? Armature Works’ Run Club meets every first and third Wednesday of the month from 6:30 – 8pm for a run along the Riverwalk. Runners meet on the South Lawn to begin with a short warm-up before taking off. Following the run, pick up some food and drinks from Heights Public Market. Runners 21 and older also receive 10% off their first drink at Bar AW.

Get Fit St. Pete Trail Run at Boyd Hill

1101 Country Club Way S., St. Pete
Every second Saturday, 8am in summer
There’s nothing quite like the great outdoors! For a more scenic view, join the Get Fit St. Pete Trail Run through Boyd Hill Nature Preserve. This 5k takes place every second Saturday of the month from 8am to 9am in the summer. Other times of the year, runs start at 9am. Admission to Boyd Hill is free for the trail run, just be sure to meet the instructor at the flagpole in front of the Lake Maggiore Environmental Education Center before the run. This trail is for runners and walkers of all levels, and even children are welcome so long as they’re supervised.

Hyde Park Weekly Run Club

1611 W Swann Ave, Tampa
Every Wednesday, 6:30pm
Sure, you may be used to going to Tampa’s Hyde Park for shopping, restaurants, or happy hours, but now you can also head there to run. The Irish 3.1 Run Club meets every Wednesday night at Irish 31 Hyde Park for a free 5k run along Bayshore Boulevard. Run, walk, jog, you name it. Don’t forget to stop by Irish 31 Hyde Park afterwards for food and drink specials for participants, including a discounted food menu and all-night happy hour. Already a devoted member of the run club? You’ll get a free Run Club shirt after your fifth run, plus other rewards for achieving goals.

Weedon Island Preserve parkrun

1800 Weedon Dr. NE, St. Pete
Every Saturday, 8am
There’s no better way to start the weekend than with a jog through St. Pete’s gorgeous Weedon Island Preserve. Organized by parkrun, a free community event, this 5k takes place every Saturday morning at 8am inside the Weedon Island Preserve. Open to walkers, joggers, volunteers, and spectators, you can expect a mixture of tarmac and trail paths for your route. You’ll have to register with parkrun before your first run. After that, you’ll receive a scannable barcode for future parkrun events. Following the run, participants meet and socialize over coffee at the nearby Starbucks.

Fit2Run

Not ready to commit to a club? Fit2Run, St. Pete’s superstore for all things running, partners with local breweries like Green Bench Brewing Co. and 3 Daughters Brewing to host free runs throughout the month. All paces are welcome, and some runs include shoe demos and more.
