First time at roller derby?
Here’s the gist of the game:
- Roller derby is a full contact sport played on traditional roller skates
- Each game is composed of two 30-minute periods, called “jams”
- Each team begins with 4 blockers, “the pack”, playing defense and 1 offensive player known as the “jammer”
- To score, the jammer must pass each opposing blocker during the initial lap, then the jammer accrues a point for each blocker passed on successive laps.
- While roller derby is full contact, some types of hitting are illegal and result in 30-second penalties for the offender. If an offender exceeds 7 penalties, the offender fouls out of the game
If any of those bullet points titillate your fancy, check out the next bout. However, please refrain from creating an impromptu bout at your local roller rink afterward—tempting as that may be. If you want to get involved in roller derby, get into the show by signing up with Sunshine City Roller Derby, where you’re welcome to be raucous and rowdy on four-wheels with a fun, competitive team.
