Shuffle is a key piece of St. Pete’s history

The St. Petersburg Shuffleboard Club holds a special place in the city’s heart, deeply intertwined with its rich history and cultural identity. While shuffleboard’s origins trace back to the 13th century, it was in St. Pete that the game truly found its home.

In 1928, the club played a pivotal role in standardizing shuffleboard rules, earning its place as a beacon for enthusiasts worldwide. There are even two distinct moves in the game, recognized internationally, that are affectionately referred to as the “St. Pete” and “Tampa”! Today, the club stands proudly as the custodian of the Shuffleboard Hall of Fame, honoring legends of the game and preserving its legacy for future generations.

Friday night shuffle is a local tradition

The club’s journey to this milestone anniversary is a testament to resilience and community spirit. Founded officially on January 24, 1924, the club has weathered challenges and embraced change over the decades. From its humble beginnings with two courts in front of the current club location on Mirror Lake, it grew into the largest shuffleboard club globally, boasting 110 courts at its peak. Through highs and lows, the club remained a beloved gathering place, fostering friendships and shared passions among players of all ages.

One of the club’s defining moments came in 2005 when a group of artists and preservationists joined forces to revive the sport. Led by longtime member Mary Eldridge and supported by a new wave of enthusiasts, the club experienced a renaissance that continues to this day. The introduction of St. Pete Shuffle, the free Friday night games, brought fresh energy to the club, attracting younger players and creating a vibrant community hub.
