St. Pete kids get free hands-on learning at this immersive STEAM festival

Kids at a school

This weekend in St. Pete, learning isn’t just fun; it’s free, hands-on, and taking local children on a wild and creative exploration of knowledge. Shorecrest Preparatory School is hosting its annual St. Pete STEAMfest this Saturday, October 26, from 10 am – 2 pm on its campus at 5101 1st Street Northeast. Free registration is available here.

The community-wide event is a “celebration of all things creative, inventive, imaginative and fun” as the school invites children from age 3 through 8th grade to come experience the interactive festival. Anyone can attend and participation is completely free as kids are invited to roam the festival and dive into hands-on activities in 35+ booths built around STEAM education.

The beloved annual event blends Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math, as the Shorecrest grounds are transformed into an educational wonderland for a full day of exploration and fun. The majority of the event takes place outdoors, though children ages 2-8 are invited to explore engaging STEAM activities with Shorecrest teachers in their classrooms.

Two boys work on a small robot at a table, while a separate outdoor scene shows people playing a hockey game with sticks and pucks at an event.

What can kids expect on Saturday? Hands-on, interactive, experiential learning activities include:

  • Robotics and electronics
  • Building, making and marbles
  • Arts and crafts – and more!

Plus, some of the most iconic arts and entertainment venues in Tampa Bay will be on hand and ready to immerse children in whole new worlds of creativity and nature. Participating local partners include:

  • Challenge Island
  • Clearwater Marine Aquarium
  • The Salvador Dalí Museum
  • Imagine Museum
  • MOSI
  • ZooTampa at Lowry Park
  • and many more!

While attendance is free, those who are able are encouraged to bring non-perishable goods to donate to Reach St. Pete, supporting locals in need. A list of needed items can be found here.

Additionally, there will be giveaways for the first 200 to arrive. Attendees are encouraged to bring water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, and any other supplies needed for an afternoon outdoors in sunny St. Pete. There will also be refreshments available for purchase.

Shorecrest, a preschool-12th grade independent school ranked #1 for STEM by Niche.com, has hosted and staffed the event since its inception in 2016.

“We are so proud to welcome the community for STEAMfest this year,” says Dr. Anna Baralt, Shorecrest Director of Educational Technology and STEAMfest Committee Chair. “STEAMfest is a celebration of the kind of engaging, student-centered learning we do everyday at Shorecrest. We love the opportunity to partner with local educational organizations and share these enriching experiences with children from the greater Tampa Bay Area community.”
