Rays unveil 2023 Artist Series winners, open 2024 call to artists

The Tampa Bay Rays have continued to make intentional and concerted efforts to not only stay in St. Pete, but to ensure they are a part of – and reflect – the fabric of the city and region. One of our favorite ways they do this is the Rays Artist Series, in which they partner with Creative Pinellas to commission and showcase the works of local artists at Tropicana Field.

In a joint announcement this spring, the Rays unveiled their 2023 winners and opened the call to artists process to become an artist for the 2024 rendition. Applications are open now through May 7, with finalists being selected in June.

This project ensures an inviting first impression for all those traveling to Tropicana Field, showcasing art created by artists living and working in the counties where Rays fans live. The selected artworks are shown in a gallery space in the main concourse of the ballpark, adding the splashes of color and artistic flair St. Pete is so loved for.

Each artist chosen for this project creates an original work around a sports theme that is then reproduced with the Rays on a large scale canvas. The application lists the themes, and past themes have included Jackie Robinson and the Rays; Pride and the Rays; Roberto Clemente and the Rays; and more.

Artists are invited to think of all the creative ways that the themes may be depicted, including artwork that goes beyond just depicting players in a literal manner. Each artist chosen for this project will receive $1,500 for their original artwork. Additionally, they will receive access to a suite at a Rays game and will have their work promoted nationally and internationally on the Rays website and through social media.

Now, you can see the artwork by the 2023 winners on display at Tropicana Field on every game day. All six pieces are on display on the 100 Level concourse, with three each on the first and third-base sides. This year’s six winners were Brittany Freemon, Dan Rankin, John T. Ritter, Tricia Sham, Kendel Woods, and Clifford McDonald. As always, all six artists are permanent residents in Tampa Bay Area counties.
