New Walmart, Publix Go Bungalow for the ‘Burg

"Their development team was one of the most community-minded I’ve ever worked with," says Historic Kenwood Neighborhood Association member, Timothy Martin, of the team behind the Publix going up on 34th Street near 20th Avenue in St. Petersburg.

Apparently, the bungalow style was based on input they proactively sought out from the surrounding neighborhoods, which Martin said that Publix went out of their way to work with.

Such praise for corporations is not heard every day. In fact, when we first posted a photo of the new Walmart going up at 34th Street and 1st Avenue North, the feedback was less than positive. But it seems both Publix and Walmart sought community support and input on their new locations that resulted in unique designs that represent the neighborhoods they surround.

"There’s definitely no other Walmart like it," says Walmart spokesperson, Bill Wertz, of the new location which has a distinctly bungalow style to it that was "designed to fit the community." While he wouldn’t go as far as to say it is 100% original to the chain, insiders say it’s the first of its kind in the country.

Are we seeing the softer side of Walmart blossom here in St. Petersburg, Florida?
