Layman’s Review: Three Birds Tavern

The Lamb Burger

When it comes to atmosphere, Three Birds Tavern wins. It’s the perfect place for enjoying the Burg’s perfect weather with a cold one. For that reason, we’ve always wanted to like Three Birds but the food has never quite allowed us to. That’s about to change.

Word spread quickly over Facebook of her arrival–that chef Domenica Macchia was "in the house." So, of course, we paid a visit over the weekend and spoke to her ourselves.

First off, we should make sure you realize that things are still in the early stages. She’s adding specialty items daily but full menu revamp is not likely until after the Tavern gets through one of their busiest times, St. Patrick’s Day.

True to her roots at long defunct Diner 437, the Tavern is letting Domenica be her creative self. We tried a few of her weekend brunch specials including The Lamb Burger that’s surely to become an instant classic. Served on ciabatta bread and topped with a slice of feta cheese, it came with a side of lightly peppered skinny fries and, get this, cumin aioli sauce. Yeah, it was pretty damn good. As was her Bourbon Maple Brioche French Toast & Applewood Bacon, both priced quite resonably. (Personally, we prefer bacon to be a bit more crisp, but we quite enjoyed it anyway.)

Looks like we can expect some branching out into uses of both traditional and unique meats such as duck and pork belly as well as an expansion of desserts, including the possibility of a "cookie of the day."

St. Petersburg’s Three Birds Tavern could easily be on its way to divine redemption.

Three Birds Tavern is located at 1492 4th St. North.
