We’re not going to say it. We’re not going to mention anything about where they are because this time, we may have a winner. Not that Diner 437 and Emilio’s weren’t winners because they certainly were. This is about the need for an exorcism.

No matter the food, no matter the experience, Pipo’s brings one thing to “that spot” that no one else has so far–reputation. As a small locally owned chain with two Tampa locations, Pipo’s has been serving authentic Cuban in the Bay area for about 30 years now. After opening one on 4th, their new Central Ave. location becomes their fourth. And while there are places to find a good Cuban, they are the only full-fledged Cuban restaurant downtown since Tangelo’s relocated to Gulfport.
Open for lunch and dinner, their hot tray specials and freshly made sandwiches are sure to make them a draw to the afternoon crowd. We had the roasted pork, a Best of the Bay by Creative Loafing, and gave their Cuban a go. We can see why they’ve earned the reputation for their sandwiches and their bread was spot on Cuban crunchy on the outside without being dry in the inside.
Yet, it’s probably some of the more ethnic dishes they serve up daily that are worth experiencing. If you like bacon (who doesn’t) and pork rinds, then we think the chopped pork rind might be right up your alley. Consider it a crunchy soft piece of the pig’s back that must be avoided 10 days before any blood cholesterol tests. Try it in the chimichurri or hot salsa sauce, depending on your pleasure, they add great flavor!
The staff is very polite and willing to go over all the special items with you. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Pipo’s Downtown is located at 437 Central Ave.
