Reaching for a New Octave

Better start warming up those pipes, karaoke fans. The newest place in the ‘Burg is going to allow you to show off your vocal stylings in a new Octave. Owners Amy Dee and DJ L Mo are getting their new digs, at 661 Central Ave. ready to launch into song.

They’ll be offering live music along with the karaoke, and plan to be open 7 days a week, serving alcohol, beer and wine.

Amy says they hope to have a soft opening within a month, or sooner. We say, anyone who puts a Misfits and a Michael Jackson poster beside each other is someone to watch. We’ll keep you posted.

Thuy Café Moves to Central

It’s more than just rumor that tells us the Thuy ("twee") Café is moving downtown. If you’re a fan of Bánh Mì (Vietnamese sandwiches) or Boba Tea (a crazily popular drink featuring bubbles of tapioca in dozens of fun flavors) then you probably already know about  the Thuy Café, at 5944 34th St. N. If you haven’t ever tried Bánh Mì, or Boba, it’s about to get twice as easy.

Thuy Café Owner Thuy Le ("Lay") tells us she’s opening up shop at a new location, right next to Pipos at 437 Central Ave.. Thuy’s second location will open in June, and will offer the same delicious array of sandwiches, along with its astonishing array of Boba Teas, but it will also offer much more. The new location is designed to be a full service Vietnamese restaurant, with elegant decor and a variety of seating options, from couches, indoor and out, to bar seating, to traditional restaurant banquettes.

Grand Central District’s Chili Cook Off
Grand Central District–the ‘hood between out on the 20’s blocks of Central Ave.–is heating up for its 7th Annual Chili Cookoff and Street Festival. They’ll be blocking off the Avenue between 24th and 26th Streets, between 10am and 6pm, this Saturday, Februrary 18th.

They’ll have the chili challenge, arts and crafs vendors, live entertainment, and other food vendors. This year, they’ll be bumping up the party factor, offering beer and wine for sale for the first time.  A portion of the event’s proceeds are to benefit  St. Pete’s H.O.T. (Helping Our Troops). You can buy a "tasting ticket" for $15 in advance, $20 that day, which includes a sample of all the entries, a cookbook with all of the participating recipes, and a single vote in the People’s Choice category. You can purchase your tickets here.

Little Greek in the ‘Burg
Looks like they’ve found a use for that empty building just south of 11th Ave. North on 4th street. Sign says a Little Greek will be taking over the spot beside the new age Dunkin Donuts "really soon."

According to their website, "really soon" is sometime in March.

Little Greek is a franchise with locations in Texas and Florida, that calls itself a "Neighborhood Greek Restaurant with an American influence.
