Get your bow ties and big hats ready – the St. Pete Pier is going full derby this May. The 13 Ugly Men’s 2nd Annual “Derby at The Pier” will be held on Saturday, May 4th, from 3-9 pm, bringing a huge charity gala to the St. Pete Pier.

Guests are encouraged to don their best derby hats, sundresses, seersucker suits, and bow ties for an afternoon and evening full of high-end bourbon, specialty craft cocktails, cigars, and of course, the traditional mint julep with Woodford Reserve – all while enjoying a serene, picture-perfect waterfront venue with views of the DTSP city skyline and the beautiful bay.

There will be derby-themed food and craft cocktails, naturally, as well as live music, derby-themed games, and of course, big screen TV walls to watch the race. DJ Don Pablo will be spinning hits, while famed ’80s cover band The Spazmatics will be performing on the main stage, presented by Entertainment Sponsor, Water Street Capital Group. And come hungry – there will be tons of great local food trucks on hand dishing up hot eats.

General Admission tickets are $35 in advance. Jockey Club tickets are $169, presented by Maserati Tampa & Lamborghini Sarasota, which provide an elevated experience with complimentary drinks for the duration of the event and one food truck meal ticket. Limited tickets to this area will be sold and prices increase as the event approaches, so we certainly recommend purchasing soon.

Party with a purpose with The 13 Ugly Men

The event is one of several extravagant charity fundraisers held every year by local nonprofit The 13 Ugly Men, a group that encourages people to ‘Party With A Purpose.’ This May’s event will benefit Academy Prep Center of St. Petersburg, a not-for-profit middle school which helps economically disadvantaged children utilize and value their education. Derby at the Pier is made possible by title sponsors Castellano Cosmetic Surgery Center, and  Jerry Ulm Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram.

Academy Prep’s purpose is to inspire and empower students qualifying for need-based scholarships to become future community leaders through a rigorous middle school program, coupled with ongoing graduate support.

The center’s proven approach has yielded incredible results not just in St. Pete, but in Tampa as well, where they opened a second center 20 years ago. By the time they graduate from Academy Prep, most 8th graders, on average, are scoring at or above grade-level in math and reading on national assessment tests. This despite the fact that many of these same scholars began Academy Prep two to three grade levels behind in fundamental reading and math skills.

Academy Prep achieves this goal in three main ways: by providing an exemplary college prep middle school education, expansive extracurricular and enrichment activities, and a minimum of eight years of one-on-one support for all graduates through high school, college, and into their careers.

The mission for The 13 Ugly Men is to support the Tampa Bay community through hands-on volunteerism efforts and large-scale events that raise awareness and funds for local charities. The 13 Ugly Men first appeared in the Tampa area in the 1990’s as a group of 13 Founding Members who hosted fantastic parties and wanted to improve the community by giving back.

Over the subsequent years, the Foundation has raised nearly three million dollars for deserving charities and causes around Tampa Bay. 13 Ugly Men donate to all causes and needs which makes them unlike any other 501c3.

This year’s Derby at The Pier will be yet another big event in the name of supporting local charities. Learn more by visiting their website
