Akua Imports: bringing the heart of Ghana to St. Pete and beyond

On December 28th, 2021, Jennifer “Akua” Howard-Black embarked on her second journey to Ghana with her daughter, who had just graduated college. What began as a celebration quickly became something more—a mission born from the rich culture and vibrant craftsmanship of West Africa. “I was deeply moved by the rich culture and craftsmanship of West Africa,” Akua shares. It was during this trip that Akua Imports was born, a venture that would bring a piece of that vibrancy back to the Sunshine City.

Since launching the business in 2021, Jennifer has returned to Ghana multiple times, building relationships with skilled artisans whose handmade creations embody the beauty and heritage of their communities. “I was inspired to bring a piece of that vibrancy back home,” she says, reflecting on what sparked her vision for Akua Imports in St. Petersburg.

Trendy handcrafts made in Ghana

At the heart of Akua Imports is a commitment not only to quality and style but to giving back. “Our mission is to provide quality, trendy handicrafts made in Ghana and across the Sahara, while also giving back,” Jennifer emphasizes. Each purchase helps support children and families in villages like Adeiso, Pokuase, and Berekuso, as well as the cities of Teshie and Accra.

Akua Imports isn’t just about selling products; it’s about sharing the heart of Ghana and empowering the artisans who create these beautiful works. “Akua Imports believes in sharing the heart of Ghana through every product, while empowering the artisans who created them,” Akua explains.

With each handcrafted piece, Akua Imports is supporting communities, preserving Ghana’s vibrant cultural heritage, and connecting customers to the stories and craftsmanship behind each item. To explore more, follow Akua Imports on Instagram and Facebook to see where they’ll pop up next.
