The Pier Design Challenge’s 9 Semi-Finalists

With only 9 semi-finalists left for the re-design of The St. Petersburg Pier, we decided to take a look at who they are and some of their work. Here’s a look at some of their more spectacular work that might be a prelude to what we can expect.

BIG, lead designer Bjarke Ingels of New York
Young Danish architect Bjarke Ingels has designed buildings all over the world including a highrise in Shanghai, China called “The People’s Building.” He is known for his playful yet practical approach to architecture.

Farshid Moussavi Architecture, lead designer Farshid Moussavi of London
Farshid Moussavi was born in Iran and immigrated to London. She has a Masters in Architecture from Harvard where she also now a professor. One of FMA’s most well known designs is the Museum of Contemporary Art in Cleveland, Ohio.

Frederic Schwartz Architects, lead designer Frederic Schwartz of New York
Frederic Schwartz is an award winning architect and is considered a champion for causes including green affordable housing, rebuilding communities in NYC and New Orleans. Their work includes Nike Soho, Vadodara Airport in India, and the 9/11 Memorial in Hoboken NJ.

HOK, lead designer Yann Weymouth of Tampa
Perhaps one of the more familiar names, Yann Weymouth is known to locals for his most recent works such as the Chihuly Collection, the expansion and renovation of the Ringling Museum and of course, the new Dali Museum. He has also worked one-on-one with IM Pei on the renovation of the Louvre in Paris

James Corner Field Operation, lead designer James Corner of New York
James Corner is a landscape architect and urban designer whose focus is on “developing innovative approaches toward landscape architectural design and urbanism.” They have been chosen to redesign Fresh Kills Park, NYC and most recently renowned for the popular High Line Park in NYC.

Michael Maltzan Architecture, Inc., lead designer Michael Maltzan of Los Angeles
Award-winning LA architect, Michael Maltzan, has a fine arts background and known for his work which include the Inner City Arts in Los Angeles, the UCLA Hammer Museum and the MoMA (Queens, NY). According to their website, “his work synthesizes the ambiguity of our contemporary world through an architecture that is a catalyst for new experience and an agent for change.”

Weiss/Manfredi, lead designer Weiss/Manfredi of New York
Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi are known for their integration of architecture, art, infrastructure and landscape design. According to their designers’ statement: “We design to clarify the physical and cultural identity of each project, opportunistically intergrating multiple disciplines and alternative methodologies to create meaningful settings.”

Seattle Art Museum Olympic Sculpture Park

West 8 Urban Design, lead designer Adriaan Geuze of New York
Dutch architect and urban designer Adriaan Geuze, is known for contemporary designs and innovative solutions to urban planning problems. One of his most popular designs is the Wavedecks on the Toronto Waterfront which was also a design competition that he won.

!melk Urban Design, lead designer Jerry Van Eyck of New York
Dutch landscape architect and industrial designer, Jerry Van Eyck, was previously a collaborator with West 8 before opening his own design firm. Among his notable works are the Lincoln Park in Miami, 100 Acres Park (Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza) and Pier 57 NYC.
