Bead the ‘Burg: Local artist celebrates St. Pete icons with micro art

An inverted pyramid design building made of small beads

Bead the Burg is an absolute marvel. The concept says it’s building St. Pete pixel by pixel — and these beaded wonders are beyond charming. Lauren Fraser has given some of the city’s local icons the bead treatment.

Beading ‘Burg icons

The inverted pyramid, the Banyan Motel sign, The Bends, the 600 Block, Pete’s General, and the Skyway have all been given the bead treatment. The art is lovely and strange and unique and embodies why I love this artsy community so much.

Fraser does free art drops for lucky residents on a rotating basis. Follow @beadtheburg on Instagram to keep up with the latest works hiding on the streets of St. Pete. Her latest drops was of a transfixing jellyfish along the St. Pete waterfront.

If you can’t wander around/wait for the next drop, you can browse a limited selection of beaded art on Fraser’s Etsy page.

Artist joins Drink + Draw series

The artist is participating in Green Bench‘s always popular Drink + Draw series. Fraser will lead a drawing session on February 11 from 7-9pm. She will discuss her craft and answer any questions local creatives might have about her beaded creations.

Back in March 2019, Fraser’s work was on display at MIZE Gallery on MLK Jr. Street during its MINI exhibition. The entire Bead the ‘Burg concept began as a project making beaded magnets for coworkers at Green Bench Brewing.

It’s since grown into my personal favorite St. Pete Instagram account. I still haven’t forgiven myself for missing the Parking Vehicle Keychain drop many months ago.

Make sure to follow Bead the ‘Burg on Instagram to see where she’ll drop a new piece of art next.
