Ted Peter's is one of the most renowned, and beloved family-owned restaurants in Tampa Bay

Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish (1350 Pasadena Ave S), an iconic St. Pete establishment since 1947, has shown remarkable resilience, reopening after hurricanes Helene and Milton despite some damage. This cash-only gem, beloved for its traditional methods and old Florida charm, is back to smoking fish and serving its loyal patrons, attracting locals and tourists alike to experience a true St. Pete classic.

The secret to Ted Peters’ enduring appeal is its meticulous smoking process, using native Florida Red Oak to infuse fresh fish like mackerel and mullet with rich, distinct flavors. Smoked over four to six hours, each bite captures the taste of simpler times. Set in an open-air environment with rustic picnic tables, Ted Peters offers laid-back Floridian charm, made complete by a cold draft beer served in a frozen mug for just $3.50.

The iconic smoked fish hub still shines to delight diners

Reflecting on the challenges of the storm’s aftermath, the owners shared an emotional journey: “The hardcore crew showed up to clean up all the flood damage. We shed tears when we thought we’d lost historical items, and then tears of joy when we found out we’d saved most of them. Rebuilding is happening; the place is open and smoking. One fridge, which propped up on a wall when it fell (I named it Bad A*S B), now has a dent—a daily reminder of the fridge that didn’t give up.”

No visit to Ted Peters is complete without a slice of their famous Key Lime Pie, a sweet and tangy end to a meal rooted in tradition. For anyone seeking an authentic taste of St. Pete history, Ted Peters Famous Smoked Fish is an essential stop—one that has proven it can withstand the test of time and the fury of nature.
