Last week, the St. Petersburg Area Chamber or Commerce proposed a plan to increase affordable housing in St. Pete. Here are the three most important things you need to know.
- The Chamber proposes establishing a fund (Affordable Housing Trust Fund)that would reduce the costs for developers in building affordable units.
- They also plan to adjust the current procedures and rules that make it difficult for non-profit developers to access city-owned land.
- The last bit says that the city wants to adjust the zoning regulations. They suggest developing affordable units throughout the city and close to public transit so that the city can support access to better jobs and easier transportation.
Chamber President and CEO Chris Steinocher explained, “St. Pete needs more than 20,000 units for low- and middle-income residents and we believe the best way to increase supply is for the city to make it easier for builders to construct smaller, and therefore more affordable, units. Housing equity will not be achieved by taking small steps towards solving this problem.”
