35 Reasons To Celebrate WMNF’s 35th Birthday

For 35 years WMNF Community Radio has provided Tampa Bay with the most eclectic and engaging on air programming in the world. They may be nearing middle-age but this badass group of reporters and music lovers shows no signs of slumping in the future. Cheers to you on your birthday! Oh WMNF, how we love you. Let us count the ways:

1. Their New Year's Eve Party was THE event in the Burg.

 

2. Because they drove DMB through the Burg on their first American tour.

3. They help the Bay area discover new artists daily.

 

4. Like now renowned Benjamin Booker.

 

5. They were the first station to bring hip-hop to St. Pete.

 

6. WMNF lets local non-profits record messages in the studio for free.

 

7. Because for 33 years they've hosted one of the best music festivals in the Bay

 

8. We're talking about the Tropical Heatwave: Pre-Fest, Festival and Redux

12. Including 600 monthly volunteers, and a multitude of donaters.

 

13. Their continuing news and public affairs coverage has made the Burg progressive.

 

14. Because they give young bands their first break.

17. Engaging them in the areas of PR and marketing, news reporting, archiving and engineering.

21. Their graphics are, pardon our 'merican, KICKASS.

 

22. Not only do they bump local artists, they've compiled 4 CD's highlighting the up and coming bands.

 

23. They use green technology wherever possible in their office.

 

24. Art submitted by local painters and illustrators is displayed all throughout their studios.

 

25. They aren't afraid to talk about controversial issues on the local and national level.

 

26. Larry Lisk, host of Mo' Blues Monday was honored nationally this year with a "Keeping The Blues Alive" award from the Blues Foundation.

27. What other local station has a show focusing on Native American topics, music, poetry, politics? Two Worlds Indigenous Radio, Sunday nights 9-11pm.

 

28. Each year Cigar City makes a killer brew exclusively for WMNF and Tropical Heatwave.

29. WMNF works with SPC  and other local schools to help promote all things local.

 

30. They produce 4 wicked digital stations.

32. Plus on air editorial and a fourth platform for the misc. topics.

 

33. They partner with the MIRA program to develop a strong and dedicated street team.

 

34. More than just promote festivals and shows, they host them and have been since before raptors had feathers.
