The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) and state and city representatives cut the ribbon on the newest SunRunner station in downtown St. Petersburg. Located on 1st Ave N between 2nd and 1st Streets, it is the closest stop to the waterfront and the St. Pete Pier. It’s also right across the street from Tequila Daisy and Social Roost and at the Sundial St. Pete parking garage entrance.
The new station and three additional buses were made possible by the original SunRunner network coming in at $5 million under budget. We love to see this kind of efficiency from our public transportation team.
Brad Miller, CEO of PSTA, highlighted that the station continues its mission to create “a more connected, sustainable, and accessible community for residents and visitors alike.”
SunRunner helps create safer streets in St. Pete
Gina Driscoll, a St. Pete City Council member for District 6, celebrated the system’s successes. Since the SunRunner’s debut, accidents have significantly decreased along the 1st Avenue North and South corridors. Driscoll also noted that it’s a vital network for tourists and workers all over St. Petersburg.
Florida State Representative Lindsay Cross further emphasized how effective, comprehensive public transit contributes to safer communities and helps lower the overall cost of living.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony became even more exciting when officials revealed that the St. Petersburg City Council had approved the new “SunRunner After Dark” initiative.
New After Dark initiative gets the green light
This initiative will double the number of SunRunner buses on Friday and Saturday nights, with pickups every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to midnight. Its goal is to support downtown businesses, employees, residents, and visitors.
“SunRunner After Dark will connect our vibrant nightlife with safe, affordable, and sustainable transportation,” said Copley Gerdes, Chairman of the St. Petersburg City Council.
