St. Petersburg has been listed on Livability.com’s “Top 100 Most Livable Cities in America” for 2014 at #59 with a score of 595. Our neighbor Tampa made #19 with a score of 620, topping us with a slim 25-point margin. Palo Alto, CA took the crown with a score of 646 and St. Louis, MO squeaked in at #100. Boulder, CO, Berkeley, CA, Durham, NC and Miami Beach, FL were runners up and Florida had a strong showing overall that included Ft. Lauderdale (#24), Gainesville (#34), Orlando (#39), Tallahassee (#42) and West Palm Beach (#67).
Livability.com looked at more than 1,700 cities in the USA with populations between 25,000 and 350,000 and data was collected with a demographically balanced, 2,000-person survey. The survey took into account eight categories: amenities, demographics, education, transportation and infrastructure, social and civic capital, economics and health care. In other words, this was a far more comprehensive study than Movoto Real Estate Blog’s ranking of the nation’s worst cities for food that put St. Pete as the 7th worst.

The ‘Burg had a higher health care and social and civic capital score than Tampa. The social and civic capital score refers to how people interact and get involved with their communities. These scores would imply that we are a community minded bunch of unique individuals with top-notch medical facilities. Tampa had the edge in the demographics, education and amenities categories. According to the Tampa Bay Business Journal, St. Pete has a population of 244,009 people and a median household income of $44,981 while Tampa has a population of 340,509 and a median household income of $44,947.
Not too shabby! We have a hunch that we’ll keep climbing, these are good times for the ‘Burg. See you next year Tampa and Palo Alto, we’re coming!
