St. Petersburg’s beloved Coliseum marks its 100th anniversary this November, celebrating a century as a cultural and community hub. Since its opening in 1924, the historic venue at 535 4th Ave. N. has hosted a wide array of events, from concerts and dances to weddings and galas. To commemorate this milestone, the Coliseum invites the community to a series of free events honoring its storied past.

With a history that spans numerous occasions, including New Japan Pro Wrestling tapings, performances by St. Paul and The Broken Bones, multiple antiquarian book fairs, and a lecture by a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, the Coliseum has truly shown its versatility as a local gem.

“This celebration means so much to us,” said Coliseum Manager Sarah Carvalis. “Thousands have created incredible memories here. I’m honored to be part of such a historic venue, and I know it will continue to be a special place for our community in the years to come.”

Enjoy an open house at The Coliseum

The festivities begin on Sunday, November 17, with an Open House featuring activities and live music to celebrate the Coliseum’s rich heritage. Mayor Kenneth T. Welch will open the event with a special proclamation, setting the tone for an afternoon and evening of music and dance.

Schedule of Events:

  • 1:00–1:45 p.m. – Swing Time Dance Lessons
  • 2:00–3:15 p.m. – Les Elgart Orchestra (Big Band)
  • 4:00–5:15 p.m. – The Dwayne White Quartet (of the Al Downing Tampa Bay Jazz Association)
  • 6:00–7:15 p.m. – The Impacs, the first rock ‘n’ roll band to play at the Coliseum

A special Florida Orchestra performance

The celebration continues on November 19 at 7 p.m. with a free concert by the Florida Orchestra, led by Music Director Michael Francis. This “Blue Jeans Concert” offers a relaxed setting with orchestral pop music for all ages. Admission is free, though seating is limited, and attendees must register in advance online.

Built in 1924 and acquired by the City of St. Petersburg in 1989, the Coliseum has undergone extensive renovations. Its unique architecture and vintage charm make it a versatile event space in downtown St. Pete’s historic district, steps away from local restaurants, shops, and hotels.
