There are so many little things that make St. Pete special. One of the easiest to take for granted is our biking mail carriers. Rain or shine, in the heat of the summer and the relative cold of winter, these USPS employees pedal around the Sunshine City’s historic neighborhoods to provide a vital service for us all.

Did you know St. Petersburg is one of just a few cities in America that still delivers mail by bike? About a dozen cyclists in the 33701 zip code deliver to over 15,000 people every single day.

These biking mail carriers come to and from the ‘Burg’s historic open-air post office—another local marvel.

The Open Air Post Office is an important Mediterranean Revival building marking the transition from the city’s early Mission period to the rise of Beaux Arts historicism, which would make its mark in the 1920s, according to a release from the USPS. The structure celebrated its centennial back in 2017.

The building was completed and dedicated in September 1917. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products, and services to fund its operations.
