St. Pete’s hometown airport is flying high. St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport just celebrated a major milestone as it notched the busiest month of March in its history. With non-stop routes to 65 cities, PIE welcomed 255,309 passengers in March of 2022, a whopping 45% increase over March of 2021.

Not only was it the busiest March on record, but it was the second busiest month ever in the history of the airport. The full breakdown included 251,478 domestic passengers and another 3,821 international fliers either leaving or arriving at PIE.

With the record-breaking March, PIE has already surpassed 500,000 passengers so far in 2022. The uptick potentially puts the airport on pace to break the 2019 record of 2.3 million passengers over the course of the year. For a frame of reference, as far back as 2012, the airport only saw around 900,000 passengers for the year. In 2021, just over two million passengers came through the airport.

The rise in both arriving and departing fliers follows the region’s growth as tourist destination. While Tampa Bay and the St. Pete-Clearwater area were already popular places for both business and leisure travel, the region has boomed over the last year and change as a desirable vacation spot, alongside the thousands who have permanently relocated to Tampa Bay.

As for the locals who use the airport, PIE has increased the number of destinations steadily in recent years, having added another two locations just in March alone with Allegiant starting service to Clarksburg, West Virginia and Akron-Canton, Ohio.

Through a variety of airlines, PIE offers direct flights to such destinations as Asheville, Chattanooga, Indianapolis, Key West, Nashville, Pittsburgh and even Provo, Utah. Find the full list of 65 destinations here.
