New York Times Magazine writer and Pulitzer Prize finalist Linda Villarosa will explore the devastating link between health and racism in America during an event hosted by the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg on October 9. The event is free to attend and runs from 5pm-8pm at 2333 34th Street South. Register for the event online.

Vilarosa is the author of Under the Skin: The Hidden Toll of Racism on American Lives and on the Health of Our Nation. The book, which was a 2023 Pulitzer Prize finalist, delves into the systemic forces within the healthcare system and society that contribute to Black Americans experiencing worse health outcomes compared to their white counterparts.

Shedding light on racial health disparities in America

Villarosa’s presentation promises to shed light on these disparities, drawing from her extensive research to outline how racism permeates every aspect of public health. She will address outdated assumptions in the medical industry regarding Black bodies, the impact of environmental racism, and studies that reveal poorer treatment and outcomes for Black patients. Additionally, she will discuss the long-term health effects of enduring a lifetime of discrimination.

A former executive editor of Essence Magazine, Villarosa has received numerous accolades for her work. Her awards include recognition from the American Medical Writers’ Association, the Arthur Ashe Institute, and the National Women’s Political Caucus, among others. Under the Skin was named one of the best books of 2022 by six publications, including NPR and The Washington Post, and was honored as one of the top 10 books of the year by The New York Times.

This event offers a unique opportunity to hear from a leading voice on racial health disparities. Villarosa’s insights are crucial for understanding the urgent need for change in how America addresses the health of its Black citizens.
