Heat Fest returns to Cage Brewing, bringing 20 bands together for a 3-day musical extravaganza

Known as “the band that saved The Cage”, bassist Christian Walker and keyboardist Tucker Waud of the band Dead Set Florida converted Cage Brewing, which was, as Christian explains, “a pile of dirt with a flea market inside”, into a haven for up-and-coming musicians. They “put turf over the dirt” as they tell me.

To champion the St. Pete music scene, Cage Brewing is throwing another Heat Fest. 20 bands across the genre spectrum: folk, punk, indie rock, psychedelic, and jam, with an emphasis on punk and indie, will perform at the top of every hour from 7pm – 11pm on July 19, 2pm-11pm on July 20, and 2pm-5pm on July 21. The entire event is free to attend.

“Heat Fest is to be part of the development of world-class musicians in St. Pete,” says co-owner Christian.  “Our commitment is to not only help cultivate these musicians, and help them to thrive, but for the public—they need to be influenced by music more than anything these days.”

Cage Brewery invests in the music community

Musicians will be delighted to apprise the Ramsdell sound system, locally sourced here in St. Pete, that they can tap into rather than lugging their own gear. “We don’t want musicians to have to fuss over setting up their own equipment,” says Christian.

Christian hopes that investing in the music community will mark Cage Brewing as a staple venue in St. Pete: “one step below Janus. So we can bring in bigger names in the future,” he says.

Beyond the music, Cage Brewing has been redesigned to be more attractive to families. A combination of murals and sculpture: an octopus and a whale, among them, as well as an oak fire pizza oven (one of the only breweries in the world to have one, I’m told) invites guests to languish some time here. Or, as Christian aptly puts it: “[We’re] here to offer the community something they deserve, a clean place with music and all the things we offer here.”
