The Sunshine City is getting even more light shined upon it. St. Petersburg was named one of the happiest cities in America, cited by WalletHub in its new rankings for 2024.

St. Pete cracked the top 100 this year, checking in at No. 80 overall, earning highest marks for available jobs and average salaries. In the three main categories used for the rankings, St. Pete came in the top 100 among all U.S. cities. The Emotional and Physical Well-Being rank checked in at 78, Income and Employment ranked 53rd, and Community and Environment hit No. 90 overall.

St. Pete earned a 55.4 out of 100 for maximum potential happiness. For frame of reference, neighboring Tampa, which ranked 62nd overall, earned a score of 57.49. The No. 1 happiest city in America, according to this study anyway, is Fremont, California, which earned a score of 74.16. The least happy city, of the 182 qualifying for the rankings, is Detroit, Michigan, which scored 31.43.

In order to determine the happiest cities in America, WalletHub compared 182 of the largest cities — including the 150 most populated U.S. cities, plus at least two of the most populated cities in each state — across three key dimensions: 1) Emotional & Physical Well-Being, 2) Income & Employment and 3) Community & Environment. Within those three categories, they measured 29 different metrics, applied a score to each, and tallied the total to determine the overall rankings.
