A Pulitzer Prize winning play begins performances in St. Pete this week, thanks to American Stage. “Crimes of the Heart,” the celebrated tragicomedy starring three sisters, will take center stage from January 11 – February 5, bringing an all-time great to the Burg.

Written by Beth Henley, Crimes of the Heart is set in the mid 20th century in Hazelhurst, Mississippi, where three sisters are reunited at their childhood home after a surprise murder in the family. As the family interacts, memories arise and emotions swirl, as the MaGrath sisters find themselves in predicament after predicament.

“Meg just left one. Lenny never had one. Babe just shot one. The MaGrath sisters sure have a way with men,” the promotional poster teases.

While official opening night is this Friday, January 13, American Stage has two preview nights on Wednesday and Thursday, January 11 and 12, when spectators can get in for only $20 while supplies last (tickets rise to $45 beginning opening night.) Find tickets and showtimes here.

Crimes of the Heart won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and in the years since has been lauded for its story that is equal parts hilarious, touching and dark. NY Magazine raved, “From time to time a play comes along that restores one’s faith in our theatre.”

Following its release, the play was soon adapted as a novel, and then again as a movie starring Diane Keaton, Sissy Spacek and Jessica Lange. American Stage describes the play as an opportunity to witness the grave and yet, somehow, hilarious troubles of three very different sisters.

“Follow the story of three sisters as they escape the past to seize the future,” American Stage declares. “This dark and hilarious Pulitzer Prize winning play is so true and touching and consistently funny it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has descended.”

American Stage is located at 163 3rd Street North in St. Petersburg. Shows take place Wednesday-Friday every week from now through February 5. Find showtimes and get tickets at americanstage.org.
