Every year on September 22, cities celebrate World Car Free Day. Motorists give up their vehicles for the day in favor of bicycling or walking, using a scooter, or even taking the bus, highlighting the health and environmental benefits of a car-free world. Registration info below.
Car Free Day is observed in 46 countries and over 2,000 cities, and St. Petersburg is no exception. The day is a chance to relish St. Pete’s ever-growing bike lanes, 45-mile Pinellas Trail, affordable PSTA system, and enormous bike communities, like Critical Mass.

This year, Car Free Day St. Pete’s celebrating with a scavenger hunt in the fashion of the Amazing Race. Participants will use clues to find various locations around the city (all of which are transportation-related). At each location, participants must complete a challenge that educates them about how to live car-free in the city.
Times, rules, and registration for Car Free Day St. Pete
- The event runs from 1pm – 5pm on September 22

- The starting location is at 7th Ave. S. St. Petersburg, FL (parking lot of USF campus by Tavern at Bayboro)
- Registration costs $5 per person
- Scavanger hunt teams are limited to 4 persons max
- Scavangers cannot use a car but may use public transit (SunRunner)
- If you use public transit, your registration fee covers daily fare via the Flamingo app
- Students receive a registration discount
Prizes for scavengers
Winners of the scavenger hunt will receive the following: $20 card for Red Mesa, $25 card for Big Catch, $20 for St. Pete biking tours. But everyone who participates in the event will receive a book from Tombolo Books. A lovely win for everyone who is dedicated to a car-free day.
