On May 15th, 2010, a steep decline in the stock market that drove investors away forced Bowled restaurant on 4th Street at 35th Ave. N to close its doorsBowled’s FaceBook feed that day read: "After one year, six months, three weeks and two days, Bowled is closed. It’s been a hard year and, unfortunately, too much to overcome. Thank you to everyone for keeping us going this long."  But Bowled’s Facebook fans weren’t having it. Dozens of responses, comments, pleas, and words of encouragement followed.

"The response from Facebook was unbelievable," Owner Michael Cecere said. "We opened Bowled back up because of the notion that people wanted us there. We were offered monetary help, people offered to work for free. It was really touching."

Fast forward to today and Bowled is opening a second location. Plans for the new Bowled include a 200 seat restaurant and lounge in the Kress Building at 475 Central. Though it may not quite be a franchise, as yet, it’s far from where they expected to be.

"I’m not driving a Bentley, but we’re holding our own. I look forward to the challenge," Michael said. He also said he plans to keep the current location open.

The historic Kress Building was purchased last year by Samuel Boutros, a lifelong St. Petersburg resident and good friend of Michael Cecere. Cecere says the location on Central will be a better fit for Bowled’s brand of casual, unique fusion. "Right now, we’re in a little plaza next to a Little Caesars. It does nothing for our type of food," he admied.

In addition to being much larger, the downtown location–slated to open as early as December, as late as February; depending on contractor schedules–is planning to include a lounge with a bar and live music, which is particularly important to Michael who used to sing with local bands.

While they’ll continue to offer their current signature dishes featuring bold, comfort food flavors, they’ll be adding a chef they can "trust to innovate." According to Michael, the hiring process itself will be rather innovative with a series of Iron Chef-esque nights. The customers will be the judge, and the job of Bowled’s head chef will go to the winner.

Cecere is happy to be a source of new jobs in the community. "When I have to let good people go, it’s gut wrenching. It’s rewarding being able to hire people."

Free Cappucino at the Treehouse
The Treehouse Gallery, on 2835 22nd Avenue North, which normally concentrates on unique, handcrafted furnishings has opened a casual Espresso Bar in the middle of the gallery.
