Get ready for an evening of fun, competition, and community impact! The Literacy Council of St. Petersburg (LCSP) is bringing back its highly anticipated Adult Spelling Bee at Coastal Creative (2201 1st Ave S) on Friday, April 4, at 6 p.m. This unique fundraiser combines fierce spelling battles with lighthearted entertainment, all supporting adult literacy programs in St. Pete.
The Spelling Bee has been LCSP’s signature fundraiser since 2015. According to Erin Hardy, VP of LCSP, the event became even more crucial after the pandemic took a toll on their ability to connect with learners. “Because of quarantines, staying connected was difficult. Many of our learners don’t have access to a computer, so we had to rally in 2022 to ensure the community knew we were still here. The funds we raised helped us expand our reach and match more learners with tutors.”

The adult spelling bee is one of the most fun events in St. Pete
Every dollar raised goes directly toward educational materials, tutor training, and outreach efforts. From textbooks to technology, LCSP ensures that each learner gets the resources they need to thrive. “Everything we do supports our mission to help adults learn to read,” Hardy emphasized.
The event isn’t just for expert spellers—it’s a full-on show. Meredith Myers, St. Pete’s Standup Librarian, is this year’s pronouncer, guaranteeing plenty of laughs between words. The audience fuels the energy, cheering on teams while enjoying beer, wine, and bites from local vendors.

Teams bring their A game for this unique competition
For those who struggle with spelling but love to participate, the event offers a fun twist—spectators can donate to give a team a “second chance” if they miss a word. Hardy shared, “It gets competitive, with people trying to keep their favorite teams in the game!” Plus, between rounds, raffle winners are drawn, with this year’s grand prize including a Southwest Airlines plane ticket.
Each year, standout teams bring their A-game. The BeeHives, decked out in fabulous ‘50s outfits, have placed second for the last two years and are eager for a win. Last year’s champions, The BarBEEs, surprised the crowd with their spelling prowess. One of the most heartwarming moments came when Zeke, a learner from LCSP, competed with his team OnomatoBEEia and secured third place. “Zeke said it was the best day of his life,” Hardy recalled. “Winning a raffle prize that got him on the Rays’ jumbotron was just the icing on the cake!”
Support the mission of the Literacy Council
Adult literacy is a pressing issue, affecting employment, economic stability, and even healthcare. “One in five adults in the U.S. struggles with basic reading and comprehension skills,” Hardy explained. “Improving literacy strengthens our workforce, supports families, and empowers communities.”
