Gyms have been allowed to reopen with added safety precautions, which include vigilant sanitization of all equipment, limited capacity, and an emphasis on social distancing between guests. St. Pete is an extraordinarily active city, and its residents are eager to get back to working out with some semblance of community. Crossfit 727, a wellness institution established in 2013, has found a way to bring together its adamant members while keeping trainers and guests alike safe.

Owner Ryan White, a Marine veteran, and father of two has 11 years of experience as a Crossfit coach. White got his start as a competitive athlete and coach before his passion led him to open a gym of his own.

Member wellbeing at the heart of CrossFit 727

“I found CrossFit when I needed it most and I’ve never looked back since,” said White.

Member wellbeing is at the heart of everything Crossfit 727 does.

While their doors were closed for months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, White and his team found ways to engage with members.

“The last few months have been rough and we’ve all experienced things that have been new and difficult, but through it all, we learned to adapt, get out of our comfort zones and to band together as a community to overcome,” said White in an email to I Love the Burg. “At CrossFit 727, we are lucky to have been able to help people on this unprecedented journey and we are proud that our members allow us to help them improve their lives every day.”

Allowed members to take equipment home for free

First, Crossfit 727 allowed members to take gym equipment home 100% free. White even offered free 30-minute virtual personal training sessions to keep workout enthusiasts engaged and encouraged.

“Our community is special…We are everyday CrossFitters who show up and work hard but also know how to have fun and not to take the gym too seriously,” said White. “My goal is to make everyone’s time within our walls the best hour of their day.”

Virtual social events, daily Zoom WODs with members, and plenty of digital programming through social media helped the gym continue its mission even from a distance. That virtual barrier can finally come down, and White and his crew have worked tirelessly to create a safe space ready for all who want to workout.

Crossfit 727 is placing an emphasis on outdoor focused workouts — and have even installed an outdoor rig.

They’ve also installed dedicated WOD stations for members to help mitigate the spread of germs, and are capping registration to prevent any crowding.

Crossfit 727 is newly located at 1901 3rd Avenue South. CrossFitters will enjoy a stunning view of the magnificent “Sunshine on my Mind” mural by Leo Gomez, a recent addition to St. Pete through SHINE Mural Festival.

Amenities include showers, dedicated restrooms, and air conditioning. The gym worked with local businesses to get the space ready for members. Both Wild Roots and the Refillery, an eco-boutique, supplied the gym with shower products, soaps, and sanitizers.
