The City of St. Petersburg has been awarded a $3.6 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program. This funding aims to enhance safety for pedestrians and drivers by addressing critical road hazards across the city.

Mayor Kenneth T. Welch expressed his excitement, stating, “With Environment, Infrastructure, and Resilience as one of our Pillars for Progress, I’m thrilled to announce this funding to make our roads safer. This grant will directly improve the daily quality of life for our residents by tackling safety issues that impact both pedestrians and drivers.” He also acknowledged Congresswoman Kathy Castor and federal partners for their support in securing the grant.

City plans major road improvements for pedestrians and cyclists

The funding will be used for various transportation safety initiatives, including:

  • Installing improved lighting
  • Updating pedestrian crosswalks
  • Adding curb extensions
  • Creating reduced speed zones

These projects will not only address current safety concerns but also serve as a foundation for future road safety strategies in St. Petersburg.

By implementing these improvements, the City is taking significant steps toward creating safer streets for everyone.
