In a coordinated effort with Pinellas County, Treasure Island has partially completed the cleaning and restoration of Sunset Beach following Hurricanes Helene and Milton, according to a recent Instagram post by the City of Treasure Island. Officials stated that contractors screened nearly 40,000 cubic yards of sand, returning it to the beach.
This milestone marks significant progress in the recovery, although some sections remain too narrow for contractors to access, hindering complete restoration. Due to current regulations, contractors are restricted from working below the mean high water line, which includes the remaining affected areas.

Officials tap White House for emergency aid
Local, county, and state officials are requesting additional aid from the White House. If successful, this aid would support emergency restoration services.
Should negotiations with the White House not proceed, Florida officials have a backup plan. They have applied for an emergency permit that would override existing regulations, allowing emergency nourishment operations in the restricted areas.

“It is with a heavy heart that Treasure Island announces the cancellation of this year’s Holiday Lighted Boat Parade. City officials made the decision based on safety and the continued recovery efforts in the city. Next year, the parade will sail again on Dec. 20, bigger, better, and brighter than ever.”
