In case you haven't heard, the Mahaffey Theater is prepping for their big 50th anniversary. This Sunday, April 26, beginning at 4pm, St. Pete's arts epicenter will hold a 50th Anniversary kickoff event at the plaza between the Mahaffey and The Dali.
The event will feature live music, provide residents an opportunity to register to be a contestant on The Price Is Right, happening later that evening, with appearances by Mayor Rick Kriseman and State Rep. Dave Jolly.
The boost to our city's creative and entertainment profile is owed in large part to the Mahaffey's balance between presenting major shows (i.e. Steven Martin, Queens Of the Stone Age, Robert Irivine) and giving local artists a chance to reach a larger audience (i.e. Second Thursdays on the Plaza). The gorgeous theater and consistent community support has turned the waterfront performing arts center into a must stop destination for touring artists. The Mahaffey is our Austin City Limits, our Marathon Music Works, our Red Rocks Amphitheater.
Featured performers at the kickoff event include the Lakewood High School Jazz Band and John Hopkins Middle School Steel Pan Band. Registration for The Price is Right will begin at 4pm and the live show will start at 7pm (you don't need a ticket to the event to register to be a contestant).
The celebration doesn't stop on Sunday. The Mahaffey's performance queue includes Alanis Morissette on April 28, Zeppelin USA on April 29, and Jerry Seinfeld (3 performances) on April 30 and May 1. Not to mention their final Second Thursday on the Plaza event which takes place on May 14, at 6:30pm. The event will feature music by the post-punk quartet Save the Radio.
