We’ll take any excuse we can to visit Gulfport, and the newest reason to make our way to town is a great one. 1 Chick 1 Bro Cafe Bistro opened last weekend at 1431 49th Street South, and already the Latin restaurant is earning rave reviews.

The family-run bistro offers a wide range of Venezuelan and Latin-inspired cuisine, and is even open for breakfast. As you might expect, arepas take center stage, and in fact there are a full 14 different varieties available. From spicy sriracha chicken and pork belly options, to multiple veggie choices and even a land and sea arepa filled with steak and shrimp.

The menu also has a deep appetizer selection, including Venezuelan empanadas, tequenos, and a platter of “chicken pops” and mini arepas. There are also tacos, rice bowls, desserts, fresh juices, tea, various espresso-based coffee drinks, and even breakfast options in the morning. 1 Chick 1 Bro Cafe Bistro is open Tuesday-Friday from 8 am – 6 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 9 am – 6 pm.

The inspiration for the name 1 Chick 1 Bro comes from the brother-sister team that owns and runs the new concept, and it’s clear that this is a project born of passion for food and love for family, friends and community. After only five days of being open, that devotion to quality eats is earning an audience.

One early guest raved: “Delicious authentic Venezuelan food, I’m from Venezuela and it reminded me of home! Definitely go check them out!”

Another local added: “The best Venezuelan food I have had in the Tampa Bay Area.. and it’s right down the street. We will be back soon!”

Said one more happy customer: “Omg! Insanely good food! It’s Fresh and Flavorful. And their sauces are delicious! A must try!”

Of note, the corn-based arepas are gluten-free, and 1 Chick 1 Bro says it can make gluten-free versions of the arepas that would otherwise include a filling with gluten. Follow them on facebook for more.
