St. Pete is growing something big this Earth Month—1,000 new trees, to be exact. As part of its new Community Canopy Initiative, the city will kick off the effort with a massive tree giveaway on Saturday, April 19, offering 500 free trees to residents across two locations.
This bold initiative helps expand St. Pete’s urban canopy while giving neighbors a fun, hands-on way to celebrate Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (April 25). From improving air quality to cooling down neighborhoods, planting a tree is one of the easiest ways residents can make a lasting impact on their community.

Each St. Pete household can take home one free tree, available on a first-come, first-served basis. The city will offer four native varieties:
- South Florida Slash Pine
- Sand Live Oak
- Sweetgum

Staff on-site will help attendees choose the best tree for their yard based on availability. Free organic soil and mulch will also be available, so bring containers if you can.
All trees must be planted on private property, not in the right of way.
Building a greener, healthier St. Pete
The Community Canopy Initiative aims to create a healthier urban environment while reducing the heat island effect and increasing biodiversity. Trees also boost property value, provide essential wildlife habitat, and make neighborhoods more walkable and enjoyable.
By distributing trees directly to residents, the city empowers the community to take climate action right from their own front yards.
