From the garage to full-time roasters: Hogg Batch Coffee is a St. Pete success story

In St. Pete’s Grand Central District, Hogg Batch Coffee Roastery has become a beacon of caffeinated creativity. The twin brothers Duane and David Hogg have a story as rich as the coffee they roast. Their quaint local roastery is situated at 2327 Central Avenue, and their bourbon barrel-aged beans are unlike any you’ll try in the Sunshine State.

From Connecticut to Florida, the Hogg brothers have always done life together. Shared experiences have marked their journey, from attending the same college to fully immersing themselves in the arts. With artistic roots and a passion for creativity, Hogg Batch Coffee was founded to craft exceptional products that disrupt the mundane routines of daily life and stand the test of time.

Hogg Batch started with just one cast iron skillet

Their venture started humbly, with the twins fully invested in exploring the art of coffee roasting with a cast iron skillet and a popcorn popper. Launching during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic, they faced a fiercely competitive market.

The Hogg Brothers harbor a deep love for this community, and the pair hustled hard to make their mark in the region. You could find them posted up at community events, major markets such as Local Shop’s annual holiday “Shopapalooza,” and even taking the top prize at our own Whiskey Wonderland. Not content to simply table and serve passersby, the charismatic Hogg brothers were smoking coffee-infused craft cocktails on-site to the delight of attendees.

What truly distinguishes Hogg Batch Coffee is its diversity of options and innovative approaches. They offer a wide range of limited-release batches, from single-origin to unaged coffee. Notably, their pioneering efforts in barrel-aged and fermentation coffee have made them a standout in Florida’s coffee scene.

“Our beans undergo a unique aging process in fresh bourbon or other spirits barrels,” write the Hogg brothers. “This distinctive method allows us to draw out nuanced flavor notes that redefine your coffee experience, delivering a delightful surprise with every sip.”

Securing partnerships with cafes across Tampa Bay

Local partnerships have been key to Hogg Batch’s success. Collaborations with local businesses like The Scott, Eat Art Love, Urban Drinkery, Undergrounds, and Craft Kafe have helped elevate their brand while staying true to their St. Pete roots.

Looking ahead, the Hogg brothers envision expanding their partnerships and strengthening the Hogg Batch brand. Their artistic background, which initially manifested as a design company in college, continues to influence their work. As they plan to reintroduce more merchandise, their creative spirit remains at the forefront.

In the spirit of cultural growth, Hogg Batch shares this powerful message: “Thank you for supporting a Black-owned business. Supporting inclusion, change, and culture. We hope this begins to build a habit of diversification and forces us to confront our own bubbles and comfort zones with a desire for what is missing…unity.”

Duane and David Hogg additionally believe that “every space deserves great coffee,” and their journey from the garage to the Grand Central District is a testament to their passion and resilience. You can order these coffee beans online at Hoggbatch.com with free shipping for Florida residents and by appointment only, you can find them crafting their magic at 2327 Central Ave.
