In response to the aftermath of Hurricanes Helene and Milton, St. Petersburg’s permitting team is working overtime to assist residents with storm recovery efforts. The city has experienced an unprecedented surge in permit requests as homeowners navigate the 49% Rule and work to ensure compliance.

Since the storms, the city has completed thousands of inspections and processed hundreds of permits each month. Here’s a breakdown of the recent activity:

  • September: 6,573 inspections completed; 1,863 permits approved or in process
  • October: 6,354 inspections completed; 2,936 permits approved or in process
  • November (to date): 6,318 inspections completed; 2,868 permits approved or in process

Extended hours for permitting services

To accommodate the high demand, the city has extended hours for in-person permitting services. On Wednesdays, the office will now operate from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (instead of 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.) until further notice. The office remains open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Residents can visit the permitting office at the Municipal Services Center, One 4th St. N.

Due to the surge in requests, longer wait times are expected. The permitting team is working diligently to process applications and appreciates residents’ patience during this busy period.

What to bring to the permitting office

To help expedite the process, residents should arrive early and bring the following documentation:

  • Photo ID
  • Floor layout of the property
  • Summary of storm damage
  • Photos or videos of the damage (email to floodplain@stpete.org with the address and storm name in the subject line)

Tips for homeowners

City officials are also sharing these essential tips for homeowners navigating the permitting process:

  • Get permits first: Always secure the required permits before beginning repairs or construction.
  • Build back stronger: Consider upgrades that improve resilience to future storms.
  • Hire a licensed contractor: Ensure repairs meet safety standards by working with licensed professionals.
  • Elevate critical systems: Move electrical outlets and HVAC systems higher to reduce future flood risks.
  • Understand your flood zone: Know how the 49% Rule might impact your property and what repairs require permits.
