Founded by Alex Martin, fiction writer and jack of scientific know-how, Sidewalk Science Center (SSC) brings science experiments, environmental education, and astronomy to public spaces (including sidewalks). The sidewalk events are always free, encouraging young and old to tap into the magic of science. Whether conducting an experiment to show case magnetic fields, or gazing through a telescope at the mountains and craters of the moon, SCC delivers approachable and memorable activities.

SCC began as Martin’s YouTube channel and blog, which he launched while working at a children’s museum. Now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, SCC employs 15 passionate educators, volunteers, and coordinators. The organization hosts over 250 public and private events annually, primarily in Bradenton, Sarasota, and St. Pete. “Our goal is to make scientific concepts accessible and engaging,” says Martin, “so it’s not just something you watch on YouTube, but something you can experience yourself, with a trusted source providing the tools.”
And tools, they have. Among other equipment, SCC has invested in several telescopes to enhance their astronomy lessons. Event coordinator Jessica Lewis shares a story of a shy young boy who approached a telescope timidly but quickly became excited after seeing the moon up close through the eyepiece. “He saw the moon like he never had before,” says Lewis.
SCC cycles 75 experiments and lessons for all ages
SCC cycles through about 75 experiments and lessons, covering a wide range of scientific fields including astronomy, marine biology, physics, chemistry, and entomology. Popular physics experiments include dropping a magnet into a copper pipe, causing it to fall in slow motion due to a magnetic phenomenon, compared to when it’s dropped outside the pipe. Participants can also use digital microscopes to explore tiny details on rocks, under leaves, or even in their own hair.
In addition to hosting free sidewalk science events, Martin and his team collaborate with schools for STEM nights, assist the Girl Scouts of America in earning science and astronomy badges, and hold quarterly events at Bayfront Park, among many other programs.
SCC is set to impress attendees this October and beyond, especially with its focus on astronomy. Saturn is currently visible at a reasonable hour, with Jupiter, Mars, and Venus soon to follow. Soon, stargazers will have the chance to view all four planets moving along their elliptical paths together.
Events to add to your calander
SCC is aiming for 6 – 8 free sidewalk science events per month in St. Pete (check the events calendar here for details), and will begin appearing at the Sunset Market at the Imagine Museum (1901 Central Ave.) in St. Pete starting Oct. 18.
